We have all heard of the endangered species act (ESA). It is supposed to protect those animals who are..well..endangered. But, there is a really strange quirk in the ESA when it comes to chimpanzees. They are listed as endangered, unless they are in captivity, in which case they are listed as threatened.

This may not seem like a big deal, but in reality, this allows individuals in the US to own chimps as pets and allows their use in the entertainment industry. Chimps as pets are just a bad idea. They are too big and strong to be kept in a house. Because of their strength, the entertainment industry only uses young chimps and there is no guarantee of care for the rest of their lives.

But, now there is hope. The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has released a statement for public commentary that they are planning to list all chimpanzees, regardless of where they happen to live, as endangered.
